Adult & Child Safety on the Internet

Personal Safety on the Internet
For many people the Internet has become an integral part of modern life. It has also become a popular way of meeting people in the nineties. Modems all over the world are buzzing with new-found friendships and relationships. Chat-rooms and on-line dating services are common. However there are a few things to remember when communicating/meeting with people via the Internet:

  • Although lengthy conversations with people on-line may have taken place, the person on the line is known only by what they have disclosed and should not immediately be trusted as a friend.

  • Be careful about any personal information you give out over the Internet (for example name/telephone number/address etc) or arranging an encounter that could place you in a dangerous situation.

  • When arranging a meeting with somebody from the Internet - meet in a public place (for example a busy cafe) make sure somebody you trust knows where you are going and who you are meeting (or take them with you), and make sure there are plenty of people around.

  • Parents may wish to think about restricting access to particular Internet sites for their children, or getting to know their children’s on-line friends as they would get to know their other friends. The Internet opens doors but those who surf should be aware of their personal safety.

Child Security on the Internet
The growth of the internet has created a new and exciting medium. It has many positives mainly because of its ability to enhance our communication capabilities. Children of today are encouraged to embrace the internet as it will become one of the most dominating influence in their lives.

However the internet itself is a child, exposed and vulnerable to abuse. Internet chat rooms allow the making of new friends from other states and countries but ultimately you can not be sure who you are talking to. The internet provides an excellent medium for disguising people and as a result it can easily be used as a tool for crime. The internet chat room provides an excellent site for pedophiles to fish behind a computer screen luring unsuspecting victims. Enticing people to meet them at arranged times and places. The pedophiles have the upper hand, able to execute well laid plans. They choose places that best suit their intentions. Places that allow for viewing and assessing victim’s vulnerability. Arranged meetings or ‘Eyeballing’ through these chat rooms is far more dangerous than allowing your children to play in the playground unsupervised. These meetings are calculated and planned. They are far more likely to succeed if children are put in that type of position.

The only way to ensure your child’s safety is to supervise children whilst they are on the internet preventing them from being placed in that situation. Also educate your children about the dangers of ‘Eyeballing’ you are dealing with strangers. The internet attracts pedophiles. It is the perfect meeting ground visited by the most vulnerable targets.
