Personal Safety on the Internet For many people the Internet has become an integral part of modern life. It has also become a popular way of meeting people in the nineties. Modems all over the world are buzzing with new-found friendships and relationships. Chat-rooms and on-line dating services are common. However there are a few things to remember when communicating/meeting with people via the Internet: Although lengthy conversations with people on-line may have taken place, the person on the line is known only by what they have disclosed and should not immediately be trusted as a friend. Be careful about any personal information you give out over the Internet (for example name/telephone number/address etc) or arranging an encounter that could place you in a dangerous situation. When arranging a meeting with somebody from the Internet - meet in a public place (for example a busy cafe) make sure somebody you trust knows where you are going and who you are meeting (or take them with you), and make sure there are plenty of people around. Parents may wish to think about restricting access to particular Internet sites for their children, or getting to know their children’s on-line friends as they would get to know their other friends.
